The Kinetics and Mechanism of Nucleophilic Addition of n-butylmercaptan to Anisylidene nitromethane

Abstract
The rate-constants for the nucleophilic addition reactions of n-butyl mercaptan to anisylidene nitromethane (ANM) over wide pH range were determined by spectrophotometry and the rate equations which can fully explain the addition mechanism were also obtained.
From this rate equation, the addition reaction in acid media is started by addition of n-butyl mercaptan molecule but in basic media is started by addition of n-butyl mercaptide ion.
However it is not involved in Michael reaction which would be commonly expected in basic media, because ANM in strong basic media behaves as a weak acid and acid dissociation constant of ANM should be considered at the rate-equation.
